Dress Code for Advocates Dispensed With Due to Unprecedented Summer Heat: Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court addressed the issue of the mandatory dress code for advocates in light of the unprecedented summer heat, following a request by the Kerala High Court Advocates' Association. The court resolved to relax the dress code temporarily, recognizing the discomfort caused by high temperatures.

The Kerala High Court Advocates' Association submitted a representation on April 6, 2024, requesting a relaxation in the dress code due to the severe summer conditions. In response, the Full Court held a meeting on April 8, 2024, and passed a resolution regarding the dress code of advocates.

Concerning the Representation: The court noted, "The representation from the Advocates' Association highlighted significant discomfort among the advocate community due to the sweltering heat."

Resolution Details: Explaining the resolution, the judgment states, "It is resolved that advocates appearing in the District Judiciary may wear a white shirt with band, making the use of a black coat and gown optional. For High Court appearances, the gown will be optional."

Duration and Applicability: The court emphasized, "These directions shall be in force with effect from the date of publication of this notice till May 31, 2024."

The Kerala High Court approved the temporary adjustment of the dress code for advocates practicing both in the district judiciary and the High Court, effective immediately until the end of May 2024.`
