In a significant ruling on March 13, 2024, the Madras High Court, presided over by Justice C.V. Karthikeyan, granted bail to Saran Prabakar, who was arrested for driving under the influence and causing substantial property damage. The case, registered under various sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act, highlights the stringent measures taken by the judiciary in cases involving traffic violations and public safety.

Justice Karthikeyan emphasized the importance of proportional compensation and strict adherence to bail conditions in such cases. "The petitioner shall not abscond either during the investigation or trial," he stated, underlining the court's stance on ensuring justice and responsibility. The conditions set forth for bail include a bond of Rs. 10,000 with two sureties, daily reporting to the police, and a compensation deposit of Rs. 1,00,000 for the victims.

This decision comes amidst growing concerns over road safety and the accountability of offenders in traffic-related offenses. The court's directive to distribute the compensation amount to the victims proportionally, as well as the strict conditions imposed on the petitioner, reflect a robust approach to such cases.

The ruling also sets a precedent in terms of the consequences for breaching bail conditions. Justice Karthikeyan referred to the case of P.K. Shaji vs. State of Kerala to underline the legal implications of failing to comply with the court's orders.

The case of Saran Prabakar serves as a reminder of the judiciary's role in upholding the law while balancing the rights of the accused with the wider public interest. The Madras High Court's judgment in this matter is expected to influence future cases involving traffic violations and public safety.
